The Parasitological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is the only national parasitological facility that conducts multidisciplinary research in both basic and applied parasitology. The research team comprises parasitologists and molecular biologists with extensive experience in parasite biology, epidemiology and drug resistance. Since 1992 scientists from the Institute have gained 44 grant projects, mostly from domestic grant agencies. Broad international cooperation and involvement in joint projects with many foreign institutions was based of the obtaining several international grants (NATO, UNESCO, COST, The Welcome Trust, 5th Framework Programme – QLK2-CT-2001-01995, QLK1-CT-2001-01156). The Institute acts as Reference Centre for Parasitological Diagnostics for the State Veterinary Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Slovak Republic.
